As new evidence emerges, the United States, the world’s largest drug maker, is trying to take a step closer to approving its own version of Viagra, which is widely counterfeited. And with the FDA’s latest approval of a generic version of the drug, many Americans are seeing a sudden increase in prices for the drug.
“There are very specific conditions that are really challenging,” said Michael Pearson of Harvard Medical School, one of the nation’s largest drug makers. “I know there are people who are very upset and frustrated with the way it is pricing, and I know that many people are upset that the prices are increasing.”
A large number of U. S. retailers, many of whom are now the government-regulated pharmacy market, are looking to sell generic versions of the drugs as soon as this spring. “We are going to have some patients who are in the market and they want to know what they are getting,” said Wal-Mart Stores Inc. CEO Wal-Mart. “And they’re not going to be happy.”
Pharmaceutical companies like Merck, GlaxoSmithKline, Pfizer and Eli Lilly are among the world’s largest drugmakers. All three have been the subject of recent investigations by the Food and Drug Administration.
Drugmakers are trying to find the best way to maximize their sales. Pfizer is currently working on an experimental version of Viagra, which is called Cialis, and is made by Eli Lilly and Co.
“We have to be careful about the pricing. We have to be careful because if we do not take our time and we are not careful, there are people who are going to die,” said Dr. Steven Nissen, a professor of pharmacy management at the University of Southern California and a co-author of the new study. “It’s not going to be great.”
The FDA has not yet approved a generic version of Viagra. But the company is working on a different version, known as Revatio, which will be available in November. In the meantime, the FDA is looking for ways to market the drug, in addition to a generic version, for sale in the United States.
Although Pfizer and GlaxoSmithKline have been selling the drugs for many years, they have been struggling to maintain their market share, because they have been making too many sales failures.
The FDA has recommended that all new drugs sold under the brand names Viagra and Cialis be approved under the brand names, which are owned by Eli Lilly and Co. They have also found that their marketing practices may be in error.
Dr. Nissen and Pearson are not the only people who are struggling. Their own companies have been struggling to get their products on the market. They have been the subject of a new investigation by the FDA, in part by the Food and Drug Administration and by Merck.
The FDA said that it is the most serious problem facing the pharmaceutical industry. The agency had a serious safety problem in 2012 when it ordered the company’s marketing, pricing and sales of the drugs. It had been concerned about the possibility of a counterfeit version of Cialis, which is only produced by GlaxoSmithKline. And in the past two years, the FDA has made a series of changes to the drug’s marketing and pricing policies, including requiring generics and adding new packaging and labeling information.
In addition, the FDA has said it has also ordered the companies to stop selling generic versions of the drugs. In the meantime, the FDA is also working on a new, but less expensive, drug called Tadalista, which was the first drug approved for erectile dysfunction. It is also being investigated for possible dangerous overuse of the drug.
Tadalista will be sold under the brand names Vidalista and Vidalista Max. The company has also been looking for new, cheaper alternatives to Viagra.
“We are going to be using all the information that we have from our patients to make sure that there are all the medications available for people who have heart disease and other heart conditions,” said Pearson. “We have been talking to our patients about other possible options.”
“We are very pleased that we have received the FDA’s approval of Tadalista,” he said.
Tadalista is currently the only drug approved by the FDA to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension.
In March, the FDA approved Vidalista for the treatment of erectile dysfunction.
Tadalafil belongs to the group of medicines called phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE 5) inhibitors, primarily used to treat erectile dysfunction (impotence) and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Erectile dysfunction is the inability to keep a hard and erect penis suitable for sexual activity. Benign prostatic hyperplasia, also called prostate enlargement, is the non-cancerous growth of the prostate gland.
Tadalafil contains ‘Tadalafil’, which works by relaxing the blood vessels in the penis; this allows the blood to flow into the penis when the person is sexually excited. Thereby, it helps to treat erectile dysfunction. Tadalafil relaxes the bladder and prostate muscles, thereby reducing enlarged prostate symptoms such as difficulty in urination and urgent need to urinate.
You are advised to take Tadalafil for as long as your doctor has prescribed it for you, depending on your medical condition. In some cases, you may experience certain common side effects, such as headache, back pain, muscle pain, pain in the legs and arms, nasal congestion, indigestion, and facial flushing. Most of these side effects do not require medical attention and will resolve gradually over time. However, you are advised to talk to your doctor if you experience these side effects persistently.
Do not take Tadalafil if you are taking nitrates (used to treat angina), riociguat (used to treat pulmonary hypertension) or alpha-blockers; if you have heart problems or stroke, low blood pressure or uncontrolled high blood pressure. Tadalafil is not intended for use in women. Tadalafil may cause dizziness, so drive with caution. Avoid consuming alcohol as it might cause increased dizziness. Tadalafil should not be given to children as safety and effectiveness have not been established.
